Hash It and Tag It: 7 Hashtag Tips for Businesses

It all starts with millions, or even billions of persons punching letters on a screen or on a keyboard. Some are ranting about celebrity gossip, others are talking about the latest episode of scandal and others are just trying to win tickets to that concert that’s been sold out for months.

The one thing that links one person talking about the same thing to another is a hashtag.

So do you know what a hashtag is?

Some of you reading this will be like “DUUUH who doesn’t know what a hashtag is pssh.” Truth is hashtags are widely used whether it be personally or through a business.

BUT

For those who don’t….

Think of our solar system, all planets move around the sun. Let’s think of the sun as a hashtag, it’s at the center pulling all other users that are interested in that conversation to it. In other words it makes your posts more visible. A person searching for a specific hashtag will see all posts where that hashtag was used.

So as a business it is important to draw people to your topics online. Hashtags are also necessary for tracking the performance of campaigns and your overall efforts. We have been looking and many businesses and brands have been making a few simple and unforgivable mistakes with hashtags.

With that said it’s important for businesses to have a more comprehensive understanding of hashtags and how to use them.

  1. Always Have Purpose

It’s always best to develop your hashtag with a certain objective in mind. While at the same time remembering that hashtags have a specific purpose online. Picking a hashtag from thin air could be a major waste of time and would not have any use to you based on your objectives. Whether it’s to link conversations or for tracking performance or even just to extend your reach, this step will help you to choose the right hashtag for your business.

  1. Keep It Simple

When it comes to hashtags it is always best to keep it simple. When creating a hashtag it needs to be easy to spell and easy to remember. The longer the hashtag the harder it is to follow, let alone to use; especially on twitter where you only have 140 characters.

  1.  Keep It Unique

The hashtag you come up with should be unique to your brand or situation. There’s no use choosing a hashtag that is already widely used. Keeping it unique helps you to control the conversation surrounding your brand, as well as, to track conversations, performance and effectiveness of your campaign.

We created this tag for our client in the Cayman Islands; it is a perfect example. It named the event with an easy to remember and unique hashtag. That was used exclusively by persons engaging with the event.

  1.  Proof Read It                                 

You really are doing yourself and your business a huge favour by checking over your hashtag. Read it, write it…Sniff it if you have to. Anything that can be misread or misinterpreted, will be. It also helps to capitalize the first letter of words in a hashtag.

Talk about leading fans somewhere else! Here’s an example of a hashtag that was used to mean one thing to the user, but clearly has another meaning to the world. Save the date (#STD) becomes a nasty transmitted disease with one click. Yikes!!

  1.  Consistency Is Key

So you have a nice well thought out hashtag and you would like fans and followers to jump on it like ants on a piece of cake, right? Well all you have to do is use it. Hashtags can take weeks or even months to gain traction. So your hashtag has to be included in every single tweet related to your campaign, product, service or topic.

Please for the love of all things good, don’t leave off a letter or misspell anything, because then it becomes a completely different hashtag leading fans somewhere else. We don’t want that at all!

  1. Make It Searchable

After you create that awesome hashtag you’ll need to pair it with another hashtag or a pool of hashtags to get the desired reach. Your created hashtag may be new, so not many persons will be searching for it. This is where trending hashtags and other widely used hashtags come in.

These will give you the reach you need. The idea is to use hashtags you know persons will definitely be searching for. Hashtags like #Sports, #Marketing and #Tips usually do well on Twitter. On Instagram you have tags like #Instadaily, #PicOfTheDay and #Instagood to name a few. Then there are a few gems like #TGIF, #MCM, #TBT, #WCW that are used and searched no matter what platform.

  1. Don’t overdo it

Now that you know more about hashtags don’t go tag crazy and slap all the best hashtags in the world on your post. No!! Only use the best ones that are related to the topic or event. Using #Sports at a fashion show is a sure way to get unfollowed, so don’t do it. Try to keep it at 2 per post on Twitter and Facebook. For Instagram you can use up to 15 hashtags if you want.

Snap Chatting: 8 Tips and Tricks for Snapchat (iPhone)

Snapchat is a video messaging application that is quickly growing in popularity in Jamaica and beyond. As long as you know how phone cameras work, the app is pretty easy to use and should be most attractive for persons who enjoy taking selfies and capturing those special moments live. The mobile app is exciting to use particularly so for iPhone users on the unique experience that is iOS. With that said, we want to take that experience an inch further for you.

Many of you already know how to use Snapchat (or think you do) but we’re here to give you those secret tips we bet you didn’t know. Here are some tips and tricks that we believe should bring more fun to your Snapping experience.

Tips

More colours 

Believe it or not, there are more colours that can be used from the colour reel in your snaps. Take a snap and you will see a pencil icon in your top right corner, tap it and you will see a rainbow of colours available for your selection. What you will realize is that black and white are not exactly visible in the reel. If you place your finger in the rainbow of colours and drag it to the top left corner you will get white. If you drag your finger down and across you will get black. You can try to drag your finger elsewhere on the screen to see what new colours you can find. Not many have actually tried using black, grey or white doodles and if you are like me then you are tired of all the other colours; I sense an opportunity to be a trendsetter!

Third party Snap-apps

One thing about Snapchat is that the snaps you take have to be sent or uploaded within the moment to get the desired effect from your following. This means you are unable to do more editing than what is allowed on the application (filters, doodling, text). However, third party applications have come to the rescue. There are applications such as Snap Upload and Upload’n’Roll that allows the user to take photos already in your camera roll and upload to Snapchat. These applications also come with custom filters for your pleasure.

Travel-mode

There is no secret about Snapchat’s reputation for eating up our data usage. Of course, this is very disappointing since we always want to catch the most intriguing moments to share with our friends. With that said, there is a hidden setting called ‘Travel-mode’ on the application that regulates the loading of Snap stories every time you open the application on the go. First, open the application and on the home screen (you should see a view of the camera) tap the ghost at the very top. You should then see a gear at the top right corner. Tap the gear then tap ‘Manage’, from here you can switch the Travel-mode on.

Using back and front camera during recording

The Android users will be very jealous about this one. Using the iPhone, you can take your Snapchat videos and switch between front and back cameras while recording. While recording the video an icon should appear on your screen to swap between front and back camera which gives the option to alternate camera views. Unlike Android users, now you don’t have to twist your wrist in various directions to catch what is front of the phone and behind.

Tricks

Using two filters at once

Only in recent Snapchat updates have Jamaicans had access to additional filters. With more filters available the next step would have been to achieve a double filter in one snap. The developers have now made that possible by simply swiping across your screen (to the left) to navigate through the various filters available. Once you have found the filter you prefer, press and hold the screen with one finger while using another finger to swipe (to the left or right) to choose your second filter. I know, you can finally take a snap of your unique surroundings using our Kingston filter and the black and white theme – that’s the first snap I tried!

Hands-free recording

Many of us prefer to complete many tasks on Snapchat without holding the screen. Firstly, the developers allowed us to watch snaps without holding the screen. Now you can record all your snaps without touching the screen on the latest iPhone 6 iOS. Go into your phone Settings, tap General and then enter Accessibility then scroll down to Guided Access. You will need to set a passcode which can be any six-digit code. Then re-enter Snapchat app and hold the capture button to start recording, while recording triple tap the Home button after which it asks for your passcode. Hit ‘Cancel’ and you will be able to rest those fingers while recording your videos; tapping the screen will not end the recording, it will end on 10 seconds. Once this is activated, you will be able to record without touching your phone until you disable. To disable this feature, triple tap the Home button and enter your passcode.

Note: This trick may not work on the latest iPhone Operating System.

Using multiple colours in text

This is a great way to customize your text for emphasis. Just tap on your just-taken snap to add text but tap on the capital T in the top right corner to enable special text. The text will instantly get bigger and you are now able to add colour to these words. Now you can use multiple colours for different parts of the text, whether it be different letters or words. After adding colour to all the text entered, tap and hold the entire text then select the area of the text you want to focus on. Choose the colour you want in that portion of the text and you’re good to go!

Sometimes it’s not what you say, but how you present it!

You can type much more on your snap than before – this is probably the most mind-blowing of all the tricks listed here. You can post numerous lines of text in your snap but you will need help from the iPhone notepad. Go into the notepad and press the enter button as much as you want then select (copy) all the space entered. Re-enter Snapchat and paste the empty spaces into the text area. This means you have a large area to type whatever you want. This also means you have defeated those who are attempting to restrict the things you say. #PowertothePeople

Chatting Snaps: 8 Tips and Tricks for Snapchat (Android)

Snapchat is more than just taking photos and doing short videos. The app allows you to express yourself creatively through your snapstory which is available for viewing for 24 hours. A SnapStory is a photo or video you post to your very own Stories section (or feed) of your account, which is visible by you and all your friends. Here are a few basic tips and tricks to make your Snapchat experience easier.

Tip #1:Use the volume buttons to take a pic or record a video

Finding it difficult to take photos with the main button on Snapchat especially if you have a large cellphone? No worries, use the volume up or down button to record your videos or take your selfie. No setting change, just one click for your photo and press and hold to record your videos.

Trick #1: The 50/50 Filter Trick

If you want to get creative with your snaps, you can apply two filters at one time. To do so, you pick the filter you want and slide the second filter to split the image.

Step 1: Take photo

Step 2: Slide to filters – half, quarter (whatever the contrast you many desire)

Step 3: click the pencil (press the undo button to remove any marks)

Step 4: add caption and post to story

Tip #2: How to have coloured text

Why have plain boring white captions on your snaps when you can choose from 22 colours available? Having coloured text will definitely make your snaps seem more fun and the text will stand out.

Step 1: Write your caption after taking the photo in the box

Trick #2: Screenshot without notifying the sender

Snapchat typically notifies the sender whenever a user screenshot their snaps, however what if you could screenshot a snap without the sender knowing? Sure there are apps such as SnapSeeker and SaveMySnaps that can do that for you, but you really don’t need an app to do this.

Step 1: Load SnapStory for the person whose snaps you want to watch or screenshot

Step 2: Put phone on airplane mode

Step 3: Play SnapStory

Step 4: Swipe screen from right to left or left to right or press power button + home button to screenshot.

Trick #3. Draw with opacity on doodles

This feature is only available on Android and is very easy to use. You can draw in transparent colors by pressing down on the rainbow color bar until it comes up with the full color bar. Then you can simply select transparent and use that to draw.

Trick #4: Snapchat’s new selfie lenses

Snapchat’s latest update provided 14 selfie lenses which added a creative yet quirky twist to selfies. When you’re using the camera to take a selfie, just press and hold on your face to activate Lenses. You can play with Lenses before taking a Snap — just select one from the row at the bottom and follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip #4: How to delete Snapchat Account Permanently

To delete your account , there is only one possible option. You must visit the dedicated section of the official website (www.accounts.snapchat.com) and un-subscribe. Once on the website, you just have to login with your credentials and click on the button “Delete my account.” However, be sure to think twice before you “delete my account.” Once it is deleted, you cannot reactivate it and you will be obliged to create a new account one if you want to reuse the application.

Scotia Bank Jamaica vs NCB Jamaica: Who’s better on social media?

A lot of people may think that banks don’t need to have social media profiles. With the rise of mobile and online banking, banks such as Scotia Bank Jamaica and NCB Jamaica are utilizing Social Media. While they aren’t the only banks using social media, let’s see who does social media better between the two biggest names in Jamaican banking.

 

Facebook

With 45,754 Likes, Scotia Bank Group Jamaica post frequently including pictures, texts, and links to their website. They also utilize the advertising feature that Facebook offers which helps them to get more likes. They receive quite a few comments from their fans. However, their responses to these comments (though excellent) are few and far apart.

With 15,589 Likes, NCB Jamaica Limited has a lot of ground to cover in the Number of Likes Category. However, their page has a personality that captures information inside NCB and outside in the world around them. One of their recent posts spoke about Emancipation Day. Their posts include text only, photos & links to their website. They receive quite a few comments under their posts & on their page, most of which they respond to. They also feature a lot of giveaways which help to get new fans & keep current fans involved.

Twitter

Having 4,592 followers @ScotiabankJM  respond to all tweets they are mentioned in. They actively engage and assist the followers through their tweets. They tweet frequently and consistently often including links to products and photos of posters. They also show followers the 2 ladies that manage the page which gives them a sense of familiarity allowing them to match a tweet to a face.
However, they don’t seem to feature anything other than answering customer questions. There are very few tweets that are not replies (and we all know we only see replies to people we follow) which can make their page seem inactive.

Having 5,235 @ncbja has an active twitter page. Tweets are frequent and consistent. They linked their Facebook page to their Twitter account so most of their tweets are actually forwarded Facebook posts. This helps to keep major messages uniform across all platforms in addition to getting twitter followers to Like their Facebook page. . They RT & respond to tweets they are mentioned in which shows that actually keep track of their Twitter account. However, while it’s good to link your Facebook and Twitter accounts, you should have posts that are Twitter-exclusive

NCB Twitter

 

YouTube

With 299 videos and 76 subscribers, the Scotiabank Jamaica YouTube channel features videos of commercials, special projects, sponsored events, corporate seminars & every other thing they can possibly video. Their YouTube efforts are commendable. However, there is very little integration of these videos into their other social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter. Additionally there is no easy to find link to their Facebook and Twitter pages on their YouTube Channel page.

With 42 videos and 34 subscribers, the NCB Jamaica YouTube channel includes commercials, videos showing internal company changes, & videos of competition winners.  They also integrated their other social media account directly into their channel’s banner.  However, their YouTube account is not frequently active with their last activity being 5 months ago, w think it’s time for a new video NCB.

Neither brands are on Instagram or Vine

 

CONCLUSION:

In terms of overall followers Scotia Bank Jamaica has the edge over NCB Jamaica by a clear margin. In terms of Facebook it would have to be a tie because NCB has the better online personality & is better at interacting with fans but their 15,000+ fans are no match for Scotia Bank’s 45,000+ fans. In terms of Twitter Scotia Bank wins. Scotia responds to mentions which is a big thing to twitter followers (who WILL unfollow you if you don’t reply to them) and their personality is felt (especially with them telling us who we’re talking to). NCB’s Twitter account was too robotic, especially because of the lack of supplementary tweets to add to the Facebook-post-turned-tweets. In terms of YouTube, while both Scotia & NCB have very few subscribers, Scotia Bank wins hands down. They have more views and are FAR more active (come on NCB… “Last Active 5 Months Ago” ???).

That means that overall Scotia Bank Jamaica does social media better when compared to NCB Jamaica.

However, to be quite honest both Scotia and NCB have a far way to go in terms of efforts.

Scotia:

Stop relying on the fact that you have a lot of customers. You need to be more hungry for fans, followers, subscribers. Integrate all your social media pages and give them all equal attention. Respond to comments on Facebook frequently and consistently (not just when you see or you feel like it). Tell the 2 ladies managing your Twitter page their doing a great job, but they need to find ways to get more followers (which I know is easier said than done).  Invest in your videos a bit more. Better quality. Better editing. YouTube could be what makes Scotia unique among all other banks capitalize on that.

NCB:

Your efforts are excellent. However, when it comes to social media, the turtle doesn’t win the race.  Your strategies are excellent but the fans won’t come to you, you need to go to them.

How to Gain & Engage Followers on Twitter

Everyone wants thousands of followers and tons of regular activity on Twitter. What a lot of people do is follow random people in hopes they will follow back, and post a lot of irrelevant content. I can tell you this right now, that practice may not be helping your brand at all. Here’s what will work:

First, you need to have a realistic profile. Use a real twitcon (photo) and give a good description of yourself and/or your company. Remember, it is always beneficial for your brand to have a particular persona. You can also include links to your website, blog and other social networks in your description.

 

Secondly, you need to be following the right users. Stop focusing on your number of followers and start focusing on the type of followers you have. Follow persons or brands that you can relate to and have things in common with. These are the ones who will follow back and interact with you regularly.

While building your fan base, be sure to constantly post valuable content. Tweet frequently with content relevant to your brand as well as to your Twitter audience. Feel free to include jokes, quotes, photos, videos and external links. Also, be sure to use hashtags so that non-followers can see and find your content easily.

 

The way you craft your messages are also important. The most concise messages are the most effective ones. So try to keep your tweets under 140 characters as your followers are less likely to click the links to read more.

In order to keep engagement strong, you need to be responding to your followers. Here are a few tips:
1. For new followers, say a quick “thanks for following”, and make it personal by including their name and Twitter handle.
2. Always answer tweets promptly
3. Participate in Twitter chats
4. Asking questions
5. Retweet or ‘favorite’ interesting tweets by your followers
6. Participate in popular Twitter activities such as #FollowFriday (#FF)

 

Once you follow these basic tips, your followers will be more comfortable interacting with you on Twitter and are more likely to include your handle in Twitter chats and activities.

 

Other ways to engage your followers include:
– Posting frequently and at optimal times (when your followers are online)
– Host competitions on Twitter
– Have random giveaways
– Start a Vine account and make use of visual content

 

Be careful though, because once you start using these tips, you have to MAINTAIN it. Or else, your followers may lose interest. So my best advice would be to work out a twitter strategy which includes posting schedules that your social media executives can follow. The Social Psychology of Social Commerce

To many social commerce is merely e-commerce with some Facebook plug-ins on the website (Facebook being “social” and e-commerce being well “commerce”) , but it goes much deeper than that. It goes deep into the mystical land of human social psychology.

The importance of social psychology can not be overstated. This branch of psychology deals with how people think about influence and how individuals relate to one another. In Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and every other network, the social economy within each is defined by how people earn and spend social capital. Based on the commerce of actions, words, and intentions (or actions, reactions, and transactions), individuals contribute to their stature not only within each network, but among those to whom they’re connected. The same is true for organizations. You earn the relationships and the resulting stature that you deserve.

So there are in total 6 pieces that put together the puzzle of social commerce that makes it such an intriguing industry. These 6 pieces are 6 heuristic shopping traits that humans follow when making purchases. A social commerce website plays on these 6 traits to induce a shopper to make a purchase. They are as follows.

1. Social Proof (Follow The Crowd)

When a customer is about to make a purchase, they might be in a bit of a jam in deciding what to buy. At this point of indecision they’ll naturally jump into social-proof mode and will end up wanting to buy what they see others buying.

The Classic Experiment: The 42nd Street Experiment (1969). A single passerby was asked to stop in 42nd Street NYC and gaze skyward for 60 seconds. Other passersbys walked past, ignoring him. But when15 passersby were asked to do the same thing, 40% of people on the busy street also stopped to look up, almost bringing 42nd Street to a complete a halt within a minute.

To influence decisions: wish lists, popularity lists, social sharing, reviews, and social recommendations become paramount.

2. Authority (Follow the Authority)

If a doctor says eating something will kill you, your not gonna eat it. As humans we usually depend on an authority figure to guide us in making decisions. With specialist knowledge, experience and expertise, they save us time and energy thinking things through. Marketers play on this with commercials saying things like “9 out of 10 doctors approve” etc

The Classic Experiment: The Shockbox Experiments (1961). A majority (61-66%) of people recruited to participate in memory tests gave each other increasingly severe electric shocks up to and including a “fatal” 450V dose as part of the test, if asked to do so by an authority figure – a distinguished looking experimental scientist (participants receiving the shock were stooges, there was no real shock).

3. Scarcity (Scarce stuff is Good Stuff)

A function of supply and demand, greater value is assigned to the resources that are, or perceived to be, less available (diamonds, oil, classic luxury cars, new pair of Air Yeezy’s). Driven by the fear of loss our minds are hardwired to value scarce resources; we instinctively assign more value to opportunities as they become less available – part out of fear of potential loss (this is known as psychological reactance).

The Classic Experiment: The Cookie Jar Experiments (1975). Participants were asked to rate chocolate chip cookies. Experimenters put 10 cookies in one jar and two of the same cookies in another jar. The cookies from the two-cookie jar received far higher ratings, even though the cookies were exactly the same. (Also of note; ‘Romeo and Juliet Effect’ research that shows teen lovers who are restricted/prevented from seeing each other value their relationship more; and the Plexiglass Experiments that proves toddlers prefer toys that are made unavailable to them (by a plexiglass barrier)).

4. Liking (Follow those you like)

Ever bought a shirt because you saw your favourite artist wearing it? white glove anyone?. We have a natural inclination to emulate and agree with people we like, admire or find attractive, partly because it builds social bonds and trust (saying yes is a form of social grooming – the human equivalent to animals picking fleas from each other). There’s an old saying in business, people do business with people they like. And, nothing is truer than that statement in social media.

The Classic Experiment: Nixon/Kennedy Debate (1960). Radio listeners and television viewers were asked to rate the performance of two presidential candidates in a live broadcast debate. Radio listeners rated Nixon’s performance higher, but television viewers did the opposite – overwhelmingly handing the debate to Kennedy. The difference? Kennedy came across visually more likeable, more attractive and fresh-faced. Nixon, on the other hand was looking haggard (just coming from a hospital visit), unshaven and sweaty. (Also of note; research showing physical attractiveness (closely linked to liking) influences things as wide ranging as our salary and our likelihood to be found guilty in court (less attractive people twice as likely to be found guilty)).

5. Consistency (Be Consistent)

When faced with uncertainty, consumers tend not to take risks. Rather, they prefer to stay consistent with beliefs or past behavior. When these do not line up in the decision making cycle, consumers tend to feel cognitive dissonance or true psychological discomfort.

The Classic Experiment: The Big Billboard (1966). Experimenters, posing as members of the “Community Committee for Traffic Safety”, knocked on the doors of residents in an affluent residential area in Palo Alto, California, asking if they could put up a huge “Drive Carefully” billboard on their front lawn, completely obscuring their view. Not surprisingly, the vast majority (83%) refused outright, except for one group of residents, 76% of whom agreed. What this group had in common was that two weeks prior, they had been contacted and asked if they’d put a small “Be a Safe Driver” car sticker on their cars – virtually all had agreed. Once the residents had made a public commitment to a small request, they felt the need to be consistent with the large request, and accepted the big billboard.

6. Reciprocity (Repay Favors)

Perhaps the greatest asset in social capital is that of benevolence. It’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of paying it backward, where we expect to be paid or rewarded for our goods, services, or actions.  As human beings, we have an innate desire to repay favors to maintain a balance of social fairness whether or not those favors were invited.Now you know why you feel bad when you receive a fancy gift from someone on Christmas when you didn’t buy them anything.

The Classic Experiment: The Coke & The Raffle Ticket (1971). Experimenters posing as art students joined group museum art tours and found they could sell significantly more student raffle tickets at the end of the tour to other members of the tour, if during the tour they did (unsolicited) favours to tour members – such as buying them a Coke. Tour members felt the need to reciprocate the favour, even though they had not asked for the Coke in the first place.
