The memes were out, the early warnings were declared – men should not be disturbed during these matches.
These warnings were warranted. True fans (man or woman) should get the opportunity to have their undivided attention focused on an unpredictable sport like this. The ball is after all very round, and anything can happen. Anything, like the Brazilian 7- 1 massacre at the semi-finals. I laughed that day because it was a complete shock to see at this level and also I have a very cynical sense of humour. A thrashing defeat of that nature on home soil, is sure to be a “this day in sports history” feature in the near future.
Honourable mentions should now be made to the commentators whose sarcasm really kept me (and by large us) going this entire world cup. Their wit and play on words were unmatched, and really added that spice to make the games complete.
“A nation’s sorrow is now complete”
“What should have been a dream turned into a nightmare”
“They are leaking goals like a sieve”
“It looks like rain or it may be the tears of a heart-broken nation”
“Oscar scores the most pointless goal of the World Cup”
The African teams were a pleasant surprise, Suarez’s continuous biting problem was a disgrace, Neymar’s injury was unfortunate, the players were plagued with injuries and this world cup showed that one man can’t carry an entire team. The club greats like Ronaldo, Hernandez, Rodriguez, Van Persie and Rooney could not carry their teams to the finals.
64 games later, Germany and Argentina both scored the goals or defeated their opponents to make it to this final battle. With more yellow cards than goals at the finals, fans would have hoped that either Mueller or Messi would have showed up to be in real contention for the Adidas Golden Boot Award. This award was given to the well-deserving Colombian Rodriguez.Thankfully, penalty shootouts would not decide this finals as Gotze, declared the winning team before the final whistle of the 120 minutes of play.
The Germans would get two trophies, as World Cup 2014 winners and Manuel Neuer being awarded the well deserved Golden Glove Award. They played as a team and will continue to celebrate this victory for the next four years. No short praises for the Germans, who played a well-paced game all World Cup.
The real MVPs of World Cup 2014 for me, are the goalkeepers. Those saves were ……. well there are absolutely no words to describe them. The leaps, jumps, dives, rolls and clutches, in the end, were the deciding factors for the winners of each match. Tim Howard (USA), Guillermo Ochoa (MEX), Sergio Romero (ARG) have had some of the most spectacular goal saves this championship.
Whether it was because of work or unplanned conversations, it was a good feeling to be among persons, and hold my own in a football conversation. This didn’t happen over night. It took having google open a few times to get some information, but men like to know that you are willing to show a little interest. Ladies, this is the time you get to win a few points for not being able to play fifa. But I mean, I have grown. In the group stages, I was messaging a German fan and he wrote “neuer” and I responded “never what?” thinking that he made a mistake. But hey, if you ask me now, you would be surprised at just how many players I can name, test me 😉
My desire for #WorldCup2014 was more about gaining a better appreciation for this sport, that united persons across the globe to cheer, cry and argue every four years. Their animation for these games is head to head with my enthusiasm at every track event, worse watching Olympics. With my true allegiances in tact, you can imagine that my one (wo)man jury is still out on whether this is in fact the “Greatest Show on Earth”.
It is now all over. Congrats to the German fans (including myself who through association found myself cheering for the team). We are all now back to our average lives, well Commonwealth Games will begin next week :). Until then see you at #WorldCup2018 brought exclusively to Jamaica on TVJ.
